Summer Afternoon

Summer Afternoon

The dawn comes later now

morning sunlight shifts it's arc - a different angle now

Cool mornings are a welcome

Though it foretells of a season's change

The birds sing and still greets us in the morning

School bus back up chimes to start our day

The Holly berries would normally be getting red at this time,

The late frost has taken that hope of a berry filled holly and spring robin's feast

Lawnmower sounds fill the air

like grasping at ways to keep summer alive

Sunset earlier now dashes those hopes

Rope swing from a generation ago

Swinging again a continuing chain of breath and being and laughter

Sweet corn peeled by the younger ones

With bites of joy they help

In season now -like their young lives

Flower boxes, abundant growth this year

Flowering boxes overflow with petals, growing high and heavy weight

The pool is quiet now

since school starts for grandkids

Now the pool, still beauty,

yet only catches falling leaves from  the growing maples high above

I wish summer days would not end

they do

and I'm thankful for the autumn and winter too.

Wintering with summer memories

Looking forward to Spring- new life

and to summer afternoon again.

Summer Afternoon, Glimpse poetry by Joe Holuta

About this poem: Summer Afternoon is a poem about reminiscing on the summer sitting by the pool watching leaves drop as we remember the vibrant times we had with family around the house and in the pool. Remembering the laughter, the food, sweet corn, the beautiful sunshine, cooling water, treats under the shade of the umbrellas, fresh memories to last the winter until we can do it all again.  - Joe Holuta
